A Tribute to My Father, A Veteran of the U.S. Navy

On December 7, 1960 (Pearl Harbor Day), Dad (Leroy Rowe) and his younger brother, Ronald Rowe, enlisted in the U.S. Navy on the Buddy Plan so they could stay together while they were in the service. They were flown to the US Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Ill, just outside of Chicago, where they went through … [read more]

Giving Up Sweets for Lent

Today is Ash Wednesday and is the first day of Lent. While I’m not Catholic, I’ve decided to give up sweets for Lent. And I actually started giving up sweets last week instead of waiting until day. I figured there was no need to wait if I was ready.

Okay, now let me clarify … [read more]

I Lost My Desire for Sweets after Eating Some Very Weird Pancakes This Morning

I’ve always loved sweets but there were times in my life I’d go on diets and reluctantly give up all the cherished goodies I loved.

I learned something about myself though. I learned that if I deprive myself of something I really want (like sweets), what happens is I’ll end up going hog wild crazy on … [read more]

The food there is so incredibly delicious that I think we could eat every day and never get tired of it. The … [read more]

The Effect Locked Bathrooms have on Homeless People

Winter 2009

Flurries filled the air.

It was magical and sweet.

until we had sleet,

followed by snow.

The encore was freezing rain,

followed by more snow.

The trees froze.

Their branches,

heavy with ice and snow,

strained, cracked,

and sunk to the ground,

making a deafening sound.

They snapped and broke,

Heavy from the weight of the ice.

the branches came down,

the limbs flew around,

while the power lines dropped

and split … [read more]
