The images in this series is my way of visually exploring transhumanism and the possible outcomes of technological and scientific advancements. I have no idea how our species will be changed or affected by those advancements, but there seems to be many possibilities.
When I consider the possibility that the advancements may cure diseases and prolong life, I wonder how we will deal with overpopulation and finite resources. Will it result in us doing more deep space studies to find another planet where some of our population can relocate? If that happens, will that, in turn, lead to us making contact with another species? And if we make contact with another species and have access to their technologies, will that change our species even more?
Where will advancements in bionics, cloning, and robotics take us and how will it change us? Will artificial intelligence become commonplace, and if so, how will that change us? I also think about the ethical & social implications of artificial intelligence and how that will affect our species.
It seems like so much is changing, and the technological and scientific advancements that I’ve seen in my lifetime is astounding. They’re finding cures for diseases, there have been many breakthroughs in medicine, and I can’t even begin to fathom what other advancements will take place over the next 10 to 20 years.
Perhaps the outcome will change our species for the better. Perhaps we’ll live longer, be healthier, and maybe future generations won’t have to deal with so much pain and suffering which results in diseases and illnesses. Perhaps there will be other advancements which end up changing human beings in ways we can’t even imagine.
On the other hand, I wonder if all the advancements might not end up wiping out our species? Could advancements in weapons lead to our destruction?
It’s thoughts like this that I’m exploring in this series. I’m trying to visually show different scenarios, and I’m also trying to express my feelings…and that’s not easy because I have ambivalent feelings. I’ve found that it’s easier to try to visually express myself by making photo composites, and so the images in this series are all composites of two or more photos.
It’s kind of exciting to think about some of the possible changes that technological and scientific breakthroughs might bring. On the other hand, it’s also somewhat scary.
